Miss Lellebel Contest

by Rien Ultee in Nightlife & Reports , 10 december 2006

Drag bar Lellebel opened its doors for the first time in the winter of 1997 and has grown out to one of Amsterdam’s most special bars. The highlight of 2000 was winning the Canal Parade award. The Lellebel (a genial Dutch word for “slut”) offers live shows, theme evenings and performances seven days a week all through the year. Drag and transsexuality is Lellebel’s face, for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and straights. Lellebel in short, is for everybody!

During Gay Games Amsterdam in 1998 they launched a website so that everyone all over the world could find information. At www.lellebel.nl you find an updated agenda with additional information. The Agenda shows just how active all the people behind the scenes are: organizing a Miss Lellebel Contest with prizes that made it very worthwhile to wash out your panties; you could even win even a trip to the Efteling. The very successful Jam Session will return on the 5th of November from 7pm with Frederique and Princess Lesley and many others.

The Miss Lellebel Contest is one of the absolute highlights in the calendar. The Grand Finale was held in Palace at the Thorbeckeplein and was presented by Desirée dello Stiletto. The candidates had qualified in previous heats but that didn’t mean the jury chaired by Dolly Bellefleur had an easy task. The jury with amongst others Dutch actress Nelly Frijda (as Nelly Frijda) had a lot of trouble picking the winner. They needed a whole lot of champagne to come to a unanimous decision, but finally they agreed that Princess Lesley deserved to go home with a pile of prizes.

As a real princess she couldn’t stop her tears from happiness. Her performance like a veiled Muslim woman and her pointy lyrics gave most people a belly laugh.
The venue was filled with balloons and the audience had a great time. There were also great performances by Dolly Bellefleur and the promising singer Fransix. Dolly Bellefleur whispered in my ear that she is soon to launch her new CD and Fransix might appear on TV with Paul de Leeuw.

The Lellebel draws a very diverse crowd and that’s what sets it apart from other places. To take part in a rather butch straight karaoke duo was a very special experience.
The Lellebel has a living-room atmosphere: nice cozy with hospitable personnel. It’s open-minded character welcomes people with transgender feelings just as warmly as butch macho straights.
